World elements form the backbone of a fantasy world in YARPS. They exist in different categories plus numerous types with varying attributes and relations.
In YARPS, characters and creatures subsume all acting beings of a fantasy world.
Example types: PC, NPC, Animal, Monster, etc.
LLocations in YARPS contain all the spatial elements of a fantasy world. They represent the second sort of main elements of most stories.
Example types: Settlement, City, Landmark, Stretch of Water, Region, Dominion, Empire, World Region, Continent, Planet, Solar System, Galaxy, etc.
In YARPS, characters and creatures can belong to one or more groupings that are meaningful to their goals and actions and relevant for the story.
Example types: Family, Dynasty, Guild, Political Party, Religious Order, Military Unit, Company, Secret Society, etc.
Items in YARPS include all physical objects used by characters and creatures for various purposes.
Example types: Weapons, armaments, tools, everyday objects, valuables, documents, means of transportation, etc.
Topics are a kind of meta element. They are used as tags to combine other world elements. Furthermore, in topics you can describe the important aspects of your world which are not related to a certain entity. For example, in a topic you can describe how magic works in your world and group all elements with a relation to magic later on.
All world elements provide the following functionalities:
With YARPS, all elements can be created by using optimized input masks. In these input masks numerous features are available and added via various input types. Among them are selection fields using autocomplete, as well as text fields, number fields and last but not least customizable free text areas for descriptions, in-game texts, etc.
Example: The game master creates a new place, the "Thirsty Adventurer" tavern. Using the input mask, a description of the tavern, a map sketch, the number of rooms and some prices are added to the new element.
The elements of YARPS are divided into different types with different attributes and relations. In addition, YARPS offers the possibility to create new types and to adapt their attributes and relations.
Example: The game master assigns the type "building" and the subtype "tavern" to the “Thirsty Adventurer”. This will change the available attributes and relations, and YARPS will process the item in the manner intended.
One of the great assets of YARPS is the relationship between elements. YARPS has many relational attributes of elements. Based on these relations, YARPS is always ready to provide various automatic functions, compilations of elements and up-to-date information.
Example: In addition to the basic features, the game master creates relations for the new tavern "Thirsty Adventurer". He or she uses a select field to determine in which settlement the tavern is located and adds people who can be encountered in the tavern.
For each element, you can specifically decide which of its features should be visible or editable for all players, for several players in particular, or only for the game master.
Example: The game master determines that only one player knows about the tavern "Thirsty Adventurer". The entire element is set invisible to the other players. An exception is created for the one player mentioned, so he or she can see the description, the number of rooms, the prices and the map sketch, etc. However, the relations to the other persons present are kept secret, even from the one specific player.
Each user can bookmark and personalize any number of items in their personal notebook. There is also a public comment section which can be viewed and used by all users of an instance.
Example: The player whose character already knows the tavern, marks it in his personal notebook. He also notes a few key points that are particularly important to them. In the public comment section, the player asks the game master whether the tavern also runs gambling.
All elements have a unique name, and if desired, various other unique labels. If the name or a label appear in a text of any other element, YARPS automatically creates a link to the corresponding element. It does this every time a description is displayed, not only while creating it. Of course, you can also mention existing elements like in social media networks.
Example: In the description of the tavern "Thirsty Adventurer", the game master mentions a certain weapon: the “Sword of the Ogre Decapitation”; which hangs in the tavern above the fireplace. As soon as the sword is added as an element, YARPS automatically creates a link to the entry of the sword when the description of the "Thirsty Adventurer" is shown.
The attributes and relations of a kind of element (or a certain type) can be freely adapted. You can even choose the input type of new attributes, or which type of elements should be available for new relations.
Example: When creating the tavern "Thirsty Adventurer", the game master notes that places of the type "tavern" lack an attribute indicating that the tavern is operated by the "Guild of Adventurers". The game master creates this attribute as a selection field for factions. After making this change, all input masks for places of the type “tavern” will have a selection box with all existing factions.
All elements of YARPS have concise, schematic representations of their descriptions, attributes and relations. These templates already include the presentation of user-generated attributes and can be customized as desired.
Example: After the game master has created the new attribute "faction" for tavern-type places, he also changes the visual representation for such places to let that attribute stand strikingly at the entrance.
Many elements have attributes that are automatically processed or updated by YARPS. In addition, YARPS creates different, always up-to-date compilations of information based on the relations.
Example: The tavern "Thirsty Adventurer" appears in many compilations and links; (example: in the list of subordinate places of a particular settlement, in the list of places controlled by the "Guild of Adventurers" faction, as the whereabouts of the present NPC, in the notebook of the player whose character already knows the tavern from his story, and many more.)
In YARPS, story elements represent the different scales of sections of a story.
Scenes are used to describe individual experiences of the player characters. They are assigned to a specific location and all participating PC, NPC and other elements are linked. As a result, all elements involved can always provide a chronicle of all scenes they took part in.
Example: The PCs visit the tavern "Thursty Adventurer" to meet a mysterious informant.
Events are scenes that are relevant to the course of the story; even though they take place without the direct involvement of a player’s character. Because of their association with other elements (like locations and NPCs), they still become part of the chronicle.
Example: Before the PCs arrived at the "Thursty Adventurer", somebody murdered the mysterious informant.
The game master forms sessions to put together the schedule for a certain gaming session including several scenes. From the added scenes and their subordinate elements, YARPS automatically finds all the information it needs and combines it into a detailed, background-allotted schedule. Yet, rest assured, even if your PCs 'for a change' don't adhere to your plan, YARPS won't let you down! You can easily adjust your schedule. Furthermore, YARPS keeps all available information about your world and storyline readily at hand; and if your player completely ventures out of the realm of your prepared story, a glance into the Content Hub might prove to be a wise decision for supporting your improvisation skills, or the preparation of the next session.
Example: A couple of scenes taking place during a certain game session whereas the PCs arrive at the "Thursty Adventurer" and then find out that the mysterious informant has been murdered.
Storylines combine thematically connected parts of the story and can be distributed over several sessions. With their help, the game master and players can always view and supplement the experiences and information regarding a particular plot or quest.
Example: A couple of scenes taking place at different sessions in which the PCs gradually uncover who murdered the mysterious informant.
Campaigns include all scenes, sessions and storylines that were or are supposed to be played within a particular story. They are the largest unit of the story management. With their help, large and independent stories can be delineated within a certain world.
Example: A story, containing multiple sessions, where the PCs discover a large conspiracy including the murderer of the mysterious informant.
The Content Hub provides state-of-the-art search, filtering and rating features. In addition, YARPS automatically rates for you how well a content fits into your world. A preview before the final purchase ensures that you get exactly what you expect. Once you've acquired an item from the Content Hub, you can add it directly to your YARPS network, customize it and/or rewrite it to fit your needs.
You can also put your own elements in the Content Hub and monetize your imagination with just a few clicks. In doing so, you decide whether you will offer only individual elements or entire sets, such as a plot with relevant locations, characters and/or creatures. Right from the start, the Content Hub offers all the content of the Argenekon; a diverse fantasy world with numerous locations, characters, factions and stories.
This video shows some examples, based on just one face and a few elements. Of course, YARPS will finally provide a much larger choice!
The Argenekon is a multi-layered, rich game world in the fantasy genre, with historical references to European history since the Middle Ages. It has a history of more than 2,000 years, starting with a creation myth followed by the creation of a secular order, to the details of recent developments that herald a new era.
The Argenekon is a premodern world at the dawn of technological progress. It is marked by a profound change in the old order. New nations are demanding their place in the community of the great empires, entire cultures are changing, and by a revolution of the masses, one of the oldest kingdoms in the world is shaken to the core.
The Argenekon is full of factions, aristocratic houses, religious orders, secret societies, and other mysterious groups that pursue their own interests as the world changes. Everyone is heavily involved in a great game of intrigues. Become a part of it; find out who is really a player and who is just a pawn in the game.
In addition to worldly battles and intrigues, the Argenekon also knows incredible mystical creatures, powerful magic, and divine miracles. They all represent rarities in the everyday life of the Argenekon, but be prepared when meeting them face-to-face!
When creating worlds and stories with YARPS, you will get your own web portal where users will have to login if they want to see or edit their contents. For that portal, you are able to fully manage user-specific access and permissions. Users who are not explicitly invited to your portal are only able to see your content if you offer it in the Content Hub and they decide to acquire it.
YARPS was designed in early 2016 and has been under continuous development for about two years. For most of YARPS promises, there are already proof-of-concept and alpha versions that have been tested in the past year in regularly role-playing sessions. What YARPS is still missing are just the necessary steps to make it ready for the market - technical measures for mass deployment, the completion of individual functions and, above all, an attractive and intuitive interface!
YARPS is a browser application. It runs in any popular browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari or MS Edge. YARPS is also designed to be "responsive" and can therefore easily be viewed and conveniently operated on any mobile device. Since almost all data is stored on the YARPS servers, it is always up to date, regardless of your location and which device you use to login. If you play in a place with bad or no internet connection for example, or you just do not want to look at a screen during the game and prefer paper, you can export all the required information beforehand as a PDF and print it as needed.
YARPS will offer a free trial period for all features. Furthermore, there will also be a free basic version, including the use of the Core Features with some limitations!
The monthly charge for unlimited use of the Core Features should not exceed 5 €, respectively 10 € for the Special Features; but look out, the charges incur per group, NOT per person. This means, an average sized group of role players is certainly allowed to share the cost.
Furthermore, you will not need to subscribe for a certain time. Instead, YARPS will offer you prepaid credits that can be invested to keep your instance running as long as you want, as well as to buy content from the Content Hub. Plus, there will be the possibility to earn the required credits by offering your creations at the Content Hub!

YARPS proves to be very useful even after the die has been cast. With just a few clicks, after an adventure, you can share all the pre-prepared elements of the story with your players. You were spontaneous in between and improvised? No problem, even these parts of the story can easily be added by all involved. Nevertheless, you always have full control of what your players see and what they do not see - right down to the smallest element of your story.
But that's not all! In YARPS, every element of your story knows what events and adventures it was involved in. The result is a fully automatic chronicle for every single PC, every NPC, every location and every other element. All users will also receive a personal notebook where they can record all significant items and add notes.
YARPS immensely facilitates the documentation of your story by collecting and processing the elements used in the game. By releasing these elements after an adventure for the players, a chronicle of your adventures is created automatically. At the same time, however, the gamemaster retains full control over what the players see and what they do not.
YARPS easily makes it possible to create improvised parts of your adventures, such as unexpected encounters, new NPCs, surprising decisions and other elements, and then add them to the chronicles. With the permission of the gamemaster, the players themselves can contribute and supplement the chronicle with their own contributions.
YARPS not only knows the history of your adventures, it also automatically creates a complete history for all parts of your world. You want to know what recently happened at a particular location or to a particular NPC? YARPS knows.
YARPS offers all players and, of course, the gamemaster a personal notebook in which they can bookmark and comment on important elements of the story.
YARPS automatically recognizes the names of existing elements in your texts and creates connections between them on its own in addition to the links you create yourself.
Magic and mystical creatures, kingdoms and intrigues, vampires and werewolves, demons and gloom, corporations and cyberware, superheroes and satires, spaceships and planets - whatever your world is made of, YARPS is just right for you.
The main focus is on the world and your adventures, regardless of the genre, system or framework. And if you miss something, you can easily customize YARPS to your specific needs. YARPS is your workshop and you can set it up just the way you want it!
YARPS is not based on a particular world or setting, but on the foundations of storytelling and role-playing games. It is therefore suitable for worlds and settings of every genre, every time and every kind.
YARPS works with any game system, can also be adapted for self-created or unknown systems and can be easily combined with other role-playing tools.
YARPS can easily be adapted to the special requirements and needs of a particular world or story.
YARPS automatically determines from given information about a world how well a content is compatible with it.
Behind YARPS is a community of role-playing enthusiasts, most of whom can look back on nearly twenty years of experience in numerous pen & paper and live action role-playing games. Our joint RPG started with Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. After going through many systems and worlds we finally came to the decision to create our own setting and rules. The Argenekon and YARPS, back then only the name for our pen & paper rule system, were born.
YARPS and the Argenekon were developed conceptually and substantively over the years, whereby the aspect of rule development gradually took a back seat and was replaced by content and conceptual issues regarding the creation of credible and vivid worlds. In 2016, we started developing a prototype for the YARPS web application, explicitly designed to create and manage complex worlds and enable their use in role-playing. At the end of 2017 we decided to start a company and bring the project to market. The Better Than Life UG (haftungsbeschränkt), a german company with limited liability, was finally founded in March 2018 and currently acts as the project owner for the financing campaign on Kickstarter. The company is managed by Stefan Weidemann, who is also responsible for the technical development of the project.
YARPS is also funded by private investors, who provide some of the capital needed for the market launch.
The heart of YARPS consists of a powerful, narrative database of countless customizable attributes and relationships that intelligently manages all the elements of your worlds and stories. Places, characters, factions, creatures, items, and more are woven together by YARPS into a smart network, so you can keep track of them at all time and access an abundance of compilations and information.
YARPS also allows you to plan and document the ongoing evolution of your world in your database. The YARPS network of your world allows you to comfortably combine elements to scenes, adventures, and campaigns, and depict the course of your story in timelines. While doing so, YARPS continues to automatically compile your chronicles as you mark sections of your stories accordingly.
The special features include the portrait generator for creating character portraits, the map manager, which provides your maps with many interactive features, the calendar manager, which allows you to create your own calendar and that does all the time calculations for you, an innovative control of background music, where you associate music with individual elements to create music themes for places, characters and other elements, as well as a personal notebook for all users to add bookmarks and personal notes to.
Finally, at the YARPS Content Hub you can trade all the elements of YARPS from a single place to entire worlds and campaigns with the community. YARPS analyzes individually for you how well the offered contents are suitable for your world. Right from the start, the Content Hub also offers all the content of the Argenekon, a diverse fantasy world with numerous locations, characters, factions and stories.
We proudly announce that we are officially supported by DUNGEONFOG, the online map maker for RPG. Both teams already agreed on connecting their tools to equip the user with the best either has to offer.
We proudly announce that we are officially supported by the FaRK, the german fantasy and roleplaying convention!
Taking your feedback seriously, we have recently worked on visual examples of how YARPS will work and look like. Today we can proudly announce that our UI & workflow example video is ready in english as well as in german. We are looking forward to your feedback!
